Types of an Essay

Students may think that essays are all the same. But the truth is, there are actually 9 different kinds of essays, each with its corresponding purpose and functions. To further understand, look for essays on essay writing services that best shows each type of essay.

Each essay type is briefly described as follows:

  • Description. From the word itself, a descriptive essay aims to dram a picture of something. It appeals to the emotions and to the five senses.

  • Narration. A narrative essay has a story format and the content can be fictional or real. But the more real it is, the easier it is to write.

  • Process Analysis. This type of essay explains how something is done. Instead of providing photos, a a process analysis uses words to explain the process of doing something.

  • Illustration. This is different from a description essay in a way that an illustration essays uses examples to better explain something.

  • Definition. Understandably, this type of essays gives the meaning of a word. It gives the denotative (dictionary definition) and the conotative (the daily usage)  meaning of a word.

  • Classification. Things or ideas can be used in a classification essay. A general topic is broken down to sub-categories and groups.

  • Comparison and Contrast. In this type of essays, two subjects are the main focus. Their differences and similarities are show in a comparison and contrast essay.

  • Persuasion. In a persuasive essay, the writer tries to argue a topic and make the reader agree with him.

  • Cause and Effect. This type of essay explains how things affect each other. How an effect can have either one or multiple causes or a cause may have a single or numerous effects, too.
